Theatre Under The Stars announced the winners of the 2020 Tommy Tune Awards<\/strong> during an online event this evening that streamed on both Facebook<\/strong><\/a> and YouTube<\/strong><\/a>. The annual celebration of high school musical theatre in the Greater Houston area has been hosted at the Hobby Center since 2002, but due to the coronavirus crisis, organizers had to get creative.<\/p>\n

\u201cKnowing that it would be impossible to host the live event this year, we didn\u2019t want the participating students to lose out on yet another important milestone in their lives,\u201d said TUTS Artistic Director Dan Knechtges<\/strong>. \u201cThe show must go on, so our team quickly moved towards creating a virtual experience. With the help of some of Broadway\u2019s biggest names, we provided Houston\u2019s young artists a really special evening.\u201d<\/p>\n

The streaming event kicked-off with students showcasing their creativity, retelling their high school\u2019s musical in 30 seconds; followed by an introduction from Taylor Louderman<\/strong>, Tony\u00ae nominee for Broadway\u2019s Mean Girls<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m so excited that we\u2019re doing a virtual show for the first time ever,\u201d said Louderman. \u201cIt\u2019s super sad that tonight\u2019s ceremony had to be cancelled due to the ongoing pandemic that our world is facing, however it\u2019s incredible that all of you can tune in via Facebook and YouTube tonight!\u201d<\/p>\n

Presenters and special guests for the awards show included Kristin Chenoweth<\/strong> (Tony Award\u00ae-winner for You\u2019re A Good Man Charlie Brown<\/em> and Wicked<\/em>, \u201cGlee\u201d), Audra McDonald<\/strong> (six-time Tony Award-winner best known for her starring role in Ragtime<\/em>), Rob McClure<\/strong> (Mrs. Doubtfire<\/em>, Beetlejuice<\/em>), Laura Osnes<\/strong> (Rodgers & Hammerstein\u2019s Cinderella<\/em>, South Pacific<\/em>, Bonnie & Clyde<\/em>), Diane Paulus<\/strong> (Tony Award-winning director of Jagged Little Pill<\/em>, Waitress<\/em>), Andy Blankenbuehler<\/strong> (three-time Tony Award-winner for Hamilton<\/em>, Bandstand<\/em>, In the Heights<\/em>), Adrienne Warren<\/strong> (TINA<\/em>, Shuffle Along<\/em>), Jeanine Tesori<\/strong> (Tony Award-Winning composer of Fun Home<\/em>, Thoroughly Modern Millie<\/em>), Carolee Camello<\/strong> (three-time Tony Award nominee for Parade<\/em>, Lestat<\/em>, and Scandalous<\/em>), Orfeh<\/strong> and Andy Karl<\/strong> (Pretty Woman<\/em>, Legally Blonde: The Musical<\/em>), Alex Newell<\/strong> (NBC\u2019s \u201cZoey\u2019s Extraordinary Playlist,\u201d Once On This Island<\/em>, \u201cGlee\u201d), Jason Gotay<\/strong> (Bring It On<\/em>, Freaky Friday<\/em>), Joe Serafini<\/strong> and Frankie Rodriguez<\/strong> (\u201cHigh School Musical: The Musical: The Series\u201d), Michael James Scott<\/strong> (Disney\u2019s Aladdin<\/em>, Something Rotten!<\/em>), Bobby Conte Thornton<\/strong> (Company<\/em>, A Bronx Tale<\/em>), and Jason Sherwood<\/strong> (set designer for The Academy Awards\u00ae,\u201d \u201cRENT Live\u201d).<\/p>\n

A program of Theatre Under The Stars, the Tommy Tune Awards recognize and reward excellence in the artistry of musical theatre by high school students and their teachers in the greater Houston metropolitan area. The Tommy Tune Awards offer an opportunity for students and educators to share their creative accomplishments while instilling in young people the value of engaging in the performing arts as a lifelong pursuit.<\/p>\n
